Energy company Repsol has started large-scale production of renewable fuels at its Puertollano industrial complex in Spain, adding new supply capacity for the shipping sector.

The new plant can produce 200,000 mt/year of renewable diesel made from used cooking oil and other agri-food waste, Repsol said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

Repsol said the fuel can be used immediately in ships, trucks and cars through existing infrastructure.

The company invested more than €130 million in the project, which converts a former fossil fuel processing unit into a renewable fuel production facility.

According to Repsol, the use of the fuels produced at the plant could avoid around 700,000 mt/year of CO2 emissions on a lifecycle basis versus conventional fuels.

The Puertollano unit is Repsol’s second dedicated renewable fuel plant on the Iberian Peninsula, alongside its Cartagena facility.
