Port of Gothenburg Starts Construction of Liquefied Biogas Facility
Construction has started on a liquefied biogas (bio-LNG) facility at the Swedish Port of Gothenburg, with Nordion Energi developing the project to cater to shipping demand.
The facility will liquefy biogas connected to the gas grid, enabling distribution to shipping, heavy transport and industrial users beyond the reach of existing pipeline infrastructure, Port of Gothenburg said in an email statement on Tuesday.
The Port of Gothenburg said the project will strengthen its renewable bunker fuel offering as shipping companies increasingly seek lower-emission alternatives to conventional marine fuels.
Sweden-based biogas producer St1 Biokraft has already signed an agreement securing part of the future plant capacity.
The facility is expected to be completed in early 2027 and operational before the end of the year.
Once fully operational, it is planned to produce around 50 mt/day of bio-LNG.
Bio-LNG is a cleaner alternative to conventional LNG and can be used as a drop-in fuel in LNG-fuelled ships.
"This facility strengthens the port’s position in renewable bunker fuels and will make it possible to offer liquefied biogas to shipping on a larger scale,” Therese Jällbrink, Head of Renewable Energy at the Port of Gothenburg, said.
