XFuel Secures €4.1 Million Catalonia Grant for Low-Carbon MGO Plant
Drop-in fuel technology firm XFuel has secured a €4.1 million grant from Catalonia’s Nuclear Transition Fund to support construction of a low-carbon marine fuel production facility in Catalonia.
The plant will process 16,000 mt/year of marine waste oils into 14,000 mt/year of low-carbon MGO, XFuel said in an email statement on Wednesday.
The project will be located near the ports of Tarragona, Barcelona, Sagunto and Valencia to reduce emissions linked to feedstock supply and fuel distribution.
XFuel said the grant was the second largest awarded under the programme and received the highest score among applicants.
The company’s proprietary chemical liquid refining (CLR) technology converts waste hydrocarbon liquids into drop-in transport fuels that can be used without engine or infrastructure modifications.
“The Catalonia facility will be a flagship demonstration of what drop-in, waste-derived low-carbon fuels can deliver solutions that are commercially viable, infrastructure-compatible, and urgently needed by the maritime sector,” Nicholas Ball, CEO and co-founder of XFuel, said.
In January, XFuel secured $20 million in funding from maritime groups NYK Line and Stolt Ventures to scale its technology for use in shipping.
