Baleària Thursday, in a presentation of the group's 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Report, emphasised its commitment to gas in its efforts toward the sustainable development of its business.

Calling the report "an exercise in responsibility and transparency" for its different stakeholders, Adolfo Utor, the shipping line's Chairman, said the shipping line has demonstrated its "commitment to sustainability" through its alignment with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Utor says the UN SDGs present Baleària "with the challenge of running an effective business while contributing to inclusive and sustainable economic growth."

Baleària notes that it has three natural-gas-powered smartships on order, which Utor like says "will apply a smart service approach to maximise the travel experience at sea".

As Ship & Bunker has reported, Baleària signed a €200 million ($214.92 million) agreement with Cantiere Navale Visentini S.r.l. (Cantiere Navale Visentini) to build two of the new dual gas engine ferries.

The report indicates the Baleària fleet's eco-efficiency Index was 0.17 kg CO2/tonne per nautical mile in 2016.

During the same period, Baleària sailed 1,045,000 nautical miles on all its routes - a 13 percent year on year increase resulting from an increased service offering.
