Dutch inland shipping company AMS Barging has christened its new 9,000 m3 tanker Felicitas, which is designed to accommodate future modifications for methanol bunkering.

The naming ceremony took place in Rotterdam on October 16, bringing the company’s fleet to 17 vessels, the firm said in an emailed update on Friday.

The 135 m diesel-electric tanker was designed by RensenDriessen Shipbuilding and fitted out by Den Breejen Shipyard.

It features 12 cargo tanks, a dual piping system, two mass flow meters, a nitrogen generator, a bunker boom and a cargo pumping capacity of 1,800 m3 per hour.

Felicitas has completed its maiden commercial voyage and is now operating on the spot market.
The addition follows the christening of its sister vessel Fortuna earlier this year.

The vessel also features diesel-electric propulsion. AMS Barging has previously reported fuel savings of around 25% with similar propulsion systems compared with conventionally powered vessels.

“No one knows exactly what the fuel mix will look like in ten years’ time,” Martin van Veen, commercial director at AMS, said.

“We see methanol as one of the important alternatives.”

AMS Barging specializes in the transport and bunkering of marine fuels.
