Ponant Plumbs for Electric-Hybrid Newbuild

French cruise ship company Ponant has ordered a dual-fuel, polar class cruise ship.

The vessel, which will be able to operate in polar regions, is to be powered by electricity and liquified natural gas, according to maritime news provider Lloyd's List.

In additions to Norwegian shipbuilder Vard, the project includes Stirling Design International and Acker Arctic.

The cost of the newbuild is reported to be EUR270 million ($318m).

Singapore-listed Vard is majority owned by Italian shipibuilder Fincantieri.
