Netherlands-based Sunoil has said a Dutch inland barge is showing positive operational results several months after being converted to run B100 in May.

The Birjo II, owned by DK Shipping and operated by BFT Tanker Logistics, transports biodiesel from Sunoil’s Kampen production facility to storage locations and customers, the firm said in a LinkedIn post on Friday.

The conversion allows the barge to run on 100% biodiesel without replacing its engine.

Sunoil said the switch could cut CO2 emissions by up to around 90%.

The latest update shows the vessel is now operating on Sunoil’s Dutch-produced B100, with its fuel filtration system being closely monitored.

“So far, everything is running quite well,” Johann de Koning, General Manager at BFT Tanker Logistics, said.

“The filter system is being monitored closely and, at this stage, the results are better than we had anticipated.”

The barge is now successfully running on our own Dutch-produced Sunoil B100 while transporting biodiesel between our locations and customers, putting renewable fuel into practice in day-to-day inland shipping operations,” Jeroen Hovius, CCO at Sunoil, said.

Sunoil said the project could support the conversion of additional inland barges to B100 across Europe.
