Germany Adopts National Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping
Germany has adopted a national plan to cut emissions from maritime and inland waterway shipping, with €400 million allocated to new funding measures.
The National Action Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping (NAPS) includes 47 measures covering alternative marine fuels, cleaner propulsion systems, fleet modernisation and green shipping corridors, as per a press release last week.
The plan forms part of Germany's 2026 Climate Action Programme and aims to help the shipping industry reduce emissions while remaining competitive.
The government plans it would take a technology-neutral approach, allowing different climate-friendly technologies to compete in the market.
Removing unnecessary bureaucracy is also a priority.
The €400 million will be allocated through the Climate and Transformation Fund's Climate-Friendly Shipping and Ports budget item to support the sector's transition in the coming years.
The plan was developed in consultation with industry associations, researchers and federal and state government ministries.
State-owned NOW GmbH supported its development and will continue to assist with implementation.
The next steps will be discussed at the Transport Ministry's Climate-Friendly Shipping Conference on November 5.
