Norsepower Fits Six Rotor Sails on Dual-Fuel Methanol RoRo Ship
Wind propulsion firm Norsepower has completed the installation of six rotor sails on a RoRo vessel operated by French shipping company LD Armateurs.
The vessel, Spirit of Toulouse, is the world’s largest RoRo ship fitted with a wind propulsion system, Norsepower said in a press release on Thursday.
The 35 m high sails were installed by Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group at a coastal outfitting site in Shanghai.
The vessel has two methanol dual-fuel main engines. The rotor sails are designed to work alongside the engines to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Spirit of Toulouse is the first of three vessels chartered to Airbus to transport large aircraft components between production sites in Europe and North America. Its sister ships are Spirit of Mobile and Spirit of Mirabel.
The rotor sails will undergo testing during sea trials, with further optimisation planned during the vessel’s maiden voyage from China to France
