A tanker sailing in the Gulf of Aden was fired upon by occupants of a small boat carrying four people yesterday, in the second such incident reported that day.

The incident took place about 111 nautical miles southeast of Aden, Yemen, at 13:35 UTC on Monday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said in a social media post.

“A tanker has reported being approached by a small skiff with four crew, UKMTO added.

“The crew of the skiff were armed and opened fire on the vessel with an RPG."

The incident came after another container ship was fired upon earlier the same day in the Gulf of Aden.

It is unclear who was behind the attack. While Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement has carried out many attacks on commercial shipping in the region, there is no indication it was involved in this case. It is also unclear whether the attack was linked to piracy.

The incident came shortly after the US and Iran announced a preliminary agreement on Sunday aimed at easing tensions.

However, the latest attack suggests security risks for ships operating in the region remain.
