Oman has rescued 23 crew members from the Cyprus-flagged container ship GFS Galaxy after it was attacked off the country's northern coast on Saturday.

The vessel issued a distress call after the incident, which occurred about 44 nautical miles off Musandam Governorate, Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said in a social media post on Sunday.

Rescue teams recovered 23 crew members and provided them with medical care, while search operations continue for one missing seafarer.

Earlier, the UK Maritime Trade Operation reported that a container ship located nine nautical miles east of Oman had sustained damage to its stern, resulting in a fire onboard.

Military authorities later confirmed that the crew had abandoned the vessel and evacuated into a lifeboat.

The incident comes as regional tensions continue to escalate. On Sunday, the US carried out fresh strikes on Iranian targets, describing them as a response to Iran's recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
