ABB to Provide Propulsion Package for Allseas' Heavy Transport Newbuild
Engineering firm ABB will supply the power and propulsion package for offshore contractor Allseas’ new heavy transport vessel Grand Tour, which will support the offshore wind industry in Europe.
The 230 m semi-submersible vessel is being built by Guangzhou Shipyard International and is due to enter service in 2028, ABB said in an emailed statement on Tuesday.
Grand Tour will transport large offshore wind converter stations from fabricators in Asia and Europe to Allseas’ construction vessel Pioneering Spirit for installation.
The vessel will be able to carry up to 40,000 tonnes on its stern deck.
It will submerge the deck below the waterline to float converter stations onboard before positioning alongside Pioneering Spirit.
ABB will supply four 3.5 MW Azipod propulsion units, which can rotate 360 degrees to provide the manoeuvrability and station-keeping needed during the operation.
The package also includes a medium-voltage power plant, power and energy management system and remote condition monitoring.
The gearless Azipod units are designed to cut fuel use, noise, vibration and maintenance needs.
