French bunker company Maritima has begun construction of the first of two bunker vessels capable of supplying methanol, along with conventional marine fuels, for its customer, Petroineos Lavéra.

The first steel cutting ceremony for Cap Morgiou took place on October 8 at China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Yangzhou Dingheng Shipyard, Maritima’s parent company Sogestran Group said in a press release on Wednesday.

The two vessels, announced in October 2025, will be capable of carrying conventional marine fuels and biofuels along with methanol and will have dual certification for oil and chemical products.

“By renewing our fleet, we will be able to supply not only conventional marine fuels but also current and future alternative fuels,” Jean-Philippe Salducci, deputy chief executive officer of Maritima, said.

The vessels will serve the Marseille, Fos and Toulon areas in southern France.

Cap Morgiou is scheduled to launch in 2027, with delivery expected in early 2028.

Construction of the second vessel, Cap Janet, is expected to begin in six months.
