Weathernews Inc. (Weathernews) and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) says it welcomed more than 100 shipping personalities to their first joint seminar on the European Union's (EU's) Monitoring, Reporting, Verification (MRV) regulation, which was held on 27 April.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the MRV regulation requires shipping companies to submit ship-specific monitoring plans to verifiers for approval by the end of August 2017, with per-voyage monitoring set to start on January 1, 2018.

The joint seminar saw Takeshi Shimada, General Manager of the ClassNK EEDI Department, explain the EU MRV requirements and the classification society's services for shipping companies' compliance under the regulation.

Jesse Vecchione, Operations Leader of Weathernews Europe, discussed the new Emission Status Monitoring solution, as well as the company's Service Model of Fleet Performance Management.

"WNI and ClassNK have shared the goal to keep their customers familiar and updated on the new and old challenges and the two organisations feel confident this target was successfully achieved through the seminar," explained the companies.

In March, ClassNK announced that, effective March 1, it had been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) as a verifier in relation to the EU MRV regulation.
