BIMCO today announced that Anastasios Papagiannopoulos, CEO of Common Progress, has been elected as President of the international shipping association.

Upon election, Papagiannopoulos set out three themes for his two-year presidential term, including the promotion of digitalisation across the shipping industry, the reduction of administrative burden for ship masters, and the encouragement of successful implementation and effective enforcement of new stronger environmental regulations.

"BIMCO will help shipowners navigate the Ballast Water Management Convention, by highlighting the key dates and advising on equipment selection and the operational realities," said BIMCO.

"BIMCO will also continue to work with other associations and the IMO to help establish a feasible and practical implementation plan to meet the 2020 global cap on sulfur emissions."

Alongside Papagiannopolous’s election, BIMCO has also confirmed that Sadan Kaptanoglu, managing director of HI Kaptanoglu Shipping, has been elected as BIMCO's first female President Designate.

Earlier this week, Ship & Bunker reported that BIMCO has developed a standardised term sheet intended to support bilateral financing for ships.
