In response to the EU's Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation, Kongsberg Maritime (Kongsberg) Tuesday announced that it has developed a new CO2 MRV application for its K-Fleet suite of Marine Fleet Management Software.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, under the EU's MRV rules, shipping companies must submit ship-specific monitoring plans to verifiers for approval by the end of the August 2017, with per-voyage monitoring set to start on January 1, 2018.

In line with the MRV regulation, K-Fleet MRV allows for monitoring and reporting of emissions on a per voyage basis to and from EU ports, explains Kongsberg, noting that the application can be used with both new and existing K-Fleet installations.

"With the established K-Fleet software suite as a platform, we have developed a straightforward, very easy to use solution that ensures shipping companies can comply to new mandatory requirements well before the deadlines," said Rune Kristian Stålstrøm, General Manager of Fleet Performance in the Merchant Marine Division at Kongsberg.

"In combination with K-Fleet's potential to help vessels and fleets to operate more efficiently through lower fuel consumption, K-Fleet MRV is an important development that will support the shipping industry to reduce its environmental footprint."

The K-Fleet MRV system uses data collected from onboard sensors and manual entries, a feature that Kongsberg says makes it easier for the Master to verify events before reports are sent to the onshore office.

Further, K-Fleet MRV can be interfaced with other K-Fleet applications, including K-Fleet Logbook and K-Fleet Maintenance, which provides for quality assurance for onboard sensors.

"By automating much of the CO2 calculations and report generation, K-Fleet MRV reduces the burden for crews to ensure that vessel's and fleets meet the requirements of the new regulation," explains Kongsberg.
