Spanish ferry operator Balearia has floated out its first fully electric fast ferry at Armón Shipyards in Gijón.

The vessel is expected to start operating between Tarifa in Spain and Tangier in Morocco in 2027

The ferry is one of two electric catamarans being built for the route. Both will use electric propulsion, with no operational emissions from the vessels.

The 87 m catamaran has an aluminium structure and a battery system with 14 MWh of energy storage capacity. Its sister vessel is also under construction at the shipyard.

Following the float-out, the first ferry will undergo interior outfitting and the installation and testing of its onboard systems before sea trials.

The two vessels and the electrification of the ports of Tarifa and Tangier City involve an investment of more than €200 million.

“This float-out turns a strategic project for Balearia into a tangible reality and brings us closer to launching the first fully electric maritime connection between Europe and Africa in 2027,” Adolfo Utor, chairman of Balearia, said.
