WFS: No Bunker Quality Issues from 99.7% of Deliveries
Bob Thornton, Marine Technical Director at World Fuel Services has challenged the notion that the bunker industry suffers from a problem with marine fuel quality.
"Is the problem as serious as described? There's no doubt about it, when things go wrong on the ship it can be horrendous, it can be extremely costly," Thornton told delegates gathered in Singapore last week for SIBCON.
"But when I look at our statistics, and they are reasonable statistics for the industry as World Fuel Services supplies roughly 33 million tonnes of fuel per year, 99.7 percent of the time there is neither a quality claim from a ship, or a problem from a testing laboratory.
"So what this tells me is, yes, there can be problems and they can be very serious problems. But it is not an everyday event. I think those numbers speak for themselves. The industry is not as bad as people depict it to be. And it's actually pretty good, I think."
