Astomos Energy Corporation (Astomos) today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Australian LPG marketer and distributor Elgas Limited (Elgas) for the further study of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a bunker fuel.

The MOU is expected to strengthen the companies' relationship, contributing to the expansion into new business areas.

"LPG bunkering is a possible solution to meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) shipping fuels SOx limit of 0.5 percent from 2020," said Astomos.

"This MOU will enhance cooperation between Astomos and Elgas across all aspects of LPG bunkering including the sharing of information, research and development and collaboration in securing global supply sites for LPG bunkering within the Asia Pacific."

In March, Astomos said it was intending to work with Japan's other top LPG importers, possibly within the next year, to explore the feasibility of establishing LPG bunkering ahead of the 2020 implementation of a 0.50 percent cap on sulfur in marine fuel.
