Fjellstrand AS (Fjellstrand) Monday announced that it has signed a contract with Fjord 1 for the design and construction of a fully electric, battery-powered ZeroCat type ferry.

Fjellstrand says the newbuild will be a larger and further developed version of the MF Ampere, and will be equipped for both higher speed and longer range.

"Zero emission and low energy consumption are key elements valued in the tenders, and this ferry makes it possible to run even longer ferry operations on batteries alone," said Fjellstrand of the newbuild.

The vessel will be built of aluminium with a catamaran hull that is intended to optimise energy efficiency.

"We appreciate the trust Fjord1 has shown Fjellstrand for placing this order with us and see this as a vote of confidence to the development Fjellstrand is conducting for future environmental friendly ferries," said Edmund Tolo, Sales Manager of Fjellstrand.

Upon completion, the ferry is operate the route between Halhjem and VĂ¥ge in Hordaland.
