Hempel A/S (Hempel) today announced that Euronav has been using Hempel's hull monitoring service to quantify bunker savings derived from the use of hull coatings.

"Hempel's hull performance monitoring programme is enabling us to accurately determine the performance of our propulsion systems, including the propeller and hull coating," said Theodore Mavraidis, Fleet Technical Manager at Euronav Ship Management (Hellas) Ltd.

"This gives us complete insight into our return on investment. But more importantly, it also enables us to make adjustments and so improve long-term efficiency."

Working in collaboration with DNV GL, Hempel's Hull Performance Team monitored the hull and propeller performance of three Euronav vessels six months before they received the Hempaguard X7 coating.

Six months after the coating's application, data demonstrated a total increase in propulsion efficiency - a "significant" portion of which is said to have been directly attributable to the Hempaguard hull coating.

"As a result, Euronav decided to switch two more vessels – the VLCC Sandra and the Suezmax Maria – to Hempaguard X7 in the middle of 2016," said Hempel.

Last month, Hempel said it has delivered its Hempaguard X7 hull coating to Silversea Cruises' (Silversea's) 40,700 GT newbuild vessel, Silver Muse.
