WinGD to Supply Polaris with Methanol- and Ethanol-Capable Engines for Bulkers
WinGD has secured an order for four engines capable of running on both methanol and ethanol for Polaris Shipping’s Newcastlemax newbuilds.
The four 210,000-DWT vessels are being built by Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in China and are scheduled for delivery in 2031, WinGD said in an emailed update on Thursday.
The vessels will be powered by WinGD’s dual-fuel engines, giving Polaris flexibility to switch between methanol and ethanol depending on fuel availability, pricing and regulatory requirements.
“Our alcohol-fuel engine platform enables ships to operate on either ethanol or methanol,” Carmelo Cartalemi, Head of Strategic Marketing at WinGD, said.
Polaris said the dual-fuel capability would allow its charterers greater choice in how the vessels are operated as fuel economics and availability change.
WinGD said the order adds to its alternative-fuel engine portfolio, which includes LNG, methanol, ethanol and ammonia.
