Dry bulk transportation firm Safe Bulkers has taken delivery of its first methanol dual-fuel Kamsarmax bulk carrier.

The dual-fuel vessel, Kypros Island, was built by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding (Zhoushan), the company said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday.

It’s the first dual-fuel bulker to enter the Cyprus Registry, Safe Bulkers added.

The 81,200 DWT vessel was launched into the water in June. The company plans to add another dual-fuel vessel next year.

The global methanol-fuelled fleet remains heavily concentrated in the container segment.

According to classification society DNV data, there are currently 161 methanol-fuelled ships in operation, including 94 container ships and 43 oil/chemical tankers, with bulk carriers still representing only a small share of the fleet.
