The IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) has approved interim guidelines for the safety of ships using hydrogen as fuel, according to classification society DNV.

The approvals came during the committee’s 111th meeting in London, held from May 13-22, DNV said in a statement on its website on Friday.

MSC 111 also approved interim guidelines for gas carriers using ammonia cargo as fuel onboard. The guidelines had previously been finalised during the IMO’s Sub-Committee on the Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 11).

Hydrogen and ammonia are both viewed as potential low- and zero-carbon marine fuels, although both present significant technical and safety challenges linked to storage, handling and onboard use.

DNV said MSC 111 also continued broader work related to alternative fuels and emerging maritime technologies.
