ClassNK Releases Onboard Carbon Capture Handbook
ClassNK has released a handbook to help shipowners and operators assess the implementation of onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS).
The Onboard Carbon Capture Systems Implementation Framework covers the process from capturing CO2 onboard ships to its unloading, transportation, storage and final treatment, it said in an emailed update on Friday.
It also addresses monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of emissions reductions, alongside chain-of-custody (CoC) systems for tracking captured CO2 and its associated attributes.
ClassNK said the use of OCCS requires more than installing capture equipment, with suitable infrastructure and mechanisms to verify emissions reductions also needed.
The handbook draws on the classification society’s technical guidelines, demonstration projects and experience in greenhouse gas certification services. It aims to help stakeholders understand the requirements across the OCCS value chain and assess potential projects.
The handbook can be accessed from here.
