Carnival Orders Air Lubrication Systems for Three LNG-Fuelled Cruise Ships
Carnival Corporation has ordered Silverstream Technologies’ air lubrication system for three LNG-fuelled cruise ships being built by Fincantieri in Italy.
The first vessel, Carnival Destiny, is due to arrive in summer 2029, with its two sister ships scheduled for delivery in 2031 and 2033, Silverstream said in an emailed statement on Monday.
The ships will each measure about 230,000 gross tonnes, making them the largest vessels in Carnival Corporation’s fleet and the largest ships ever built by Fincantieri.
Silverstream said the order builds on its long-running relationship with Carnival, with its system having accumulated more than 127,000 operating hours across the cruise group’s fleet.
The system is installed or ordered on 18 Carnival Corporation vessels across several cruise lines, including 13 ships already in service and five newbuilds.
The latest order follows Carnival’s decision in January 2025 to equip two additional Excel-class newbuilds with Silverstream’s technology.
Those LNG-powered ships are due for delivery in 2027 and 2028.
The air lubrication system works by creating a layer of air along the hull, reducing frictional resistance between the hull and seawater.
This is designed to lower bunker fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
