Battery manufacturer AYK Energy has secured a deal with Kongsberg Maritime to supply batteries for four fully electric tugs of Svitzer.

The tugs are being built at Cochin Shipyard in India and will each be equipped with an ABS-certified 4,838 kWh battery system, AYK Energy said in a press release on Tuesday.

The deal includes an option for four additional vessels.

AYK’s batteries will integrate with Kongsberg Maritime’s electrical and automation systems, including propulsion motors, switchboards, control systems and shore charging equipment.

The deal builds on five previous Svitzer hybrid-electric tug projects involving AYK.

AYK said its lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology offers higher energy density and power while improving safety compared with NMC chemistry.

The company also recently supplied an ABS-certified 6MWh AriesA battery system for Svitzer Balder, described as the world’s most powerful electric escort tug.
