U.S.-based WR Systems Ltd. (WR) is launching a new, simplified emissions monitor for scrubber systems, industry news site MarineLog reports.

The laser-based Emsys-iS is a simplified, less expensive version of the company's standard Emsys unit designed specifically for use in scrubber projects.

"Scrubbers just need monitoring of SO2 and CO2, so all our other gases and PM features were not required," said Simon Brown, WR's international business director.

"Our customers love the calibration-free laser technology but asked us to pare down the specification and make it a more compact unit which helps in their scrubber retrofits."

The Emsys-iS fits into a ship's stack, giving real-time data for use in operating the scrubber and for compliance purposes.

WR plans to begin deliveries of the new product on January 1, 2015, the start-date for new sulfur emission rules in Emissions Control Areas (ECAs).

Brown said the standard Emsys system has already been used in about 20 scrubber projects.

WR said last year that it had received orders for Emsys units for a number of different scrubber types.
