More Than 100 Ships Now Equipped or Prepared for Wind Propulsion: IWSA
More than 100 ships are now either equipped with wind propulsion systems or classified as wind-ready, representing a combined total exceeding six million DWT, according to the International Windship Association (IWSA).
The update comes ahead of Posidonia 2026 in Athens next month, where 20 IWSA member companies are set to exhibit or host wind propulsion-related events during the trade fair, IWSA said in an emailed update on Tuesday.
The figure marks a near three-fold increase since the previous Posidonia exhibition in 2024, reflecting growing commercial uptake of wind-assisted shipping technologies.
“So far this year, we have witnessed new project announcements, order confirmations, and installation celebrations almost every week, Gavin Allwright, Secretary General of the IWSA, said.
“This is a technology sector and renewable energy solution that is clearly moving into a phase of large-scale commercial adoption.”
Wind propulsion systems, such as rigid sails, harness wind energy for propulsion, helping reduce bunker fuel consumption and emissions.
The IWSA added that shipowners are increasingly moving towards fleet-wide investment strategies rather than limiting wind propulsion deployments to individual ships.
