Lloyd’s Register (LR) has published new guidance on retrofitting existing ships for alternative marine fuels and energy-saving technologies.

The guidance covers LNG, methanol, ethanol, ammonia, hydrogen and LPG, as well as wind-assisted propulsion and air lubrication systems, LR said in an emailed update on Thursday.

It highlights the need to consider engine compatibility, fuel storage, onboard space, safety systems and crew training early in the planning process, as these can affect project costs, timelines and operational performance.

LR also stresses the importance of early cooperation between shipowners, shipyards, equipment manufacturers and classification societies to reduce risks and avoid delays.

“With much of the global fleet expected to remain in service well into the next decade, retrofit projects will play a critical role in shipping’s decarbonisation journey,” Paul Herbert, Principal Technology Specialist at LR, said.

The Guidance Notes for Retrofit of Alternative Fuels and Energy Saving Devices is available through LR’s Retrofit Research programme.
