  • LNG accounted for 48 September orders, including 26 container ships and 18 car carriers.
  • Year-to-date alternative-fuelled vessel orders reached 311, up 53% year on year

September saw 69 alternative-capable vessel orders, compared to 52 orders in August, making it the strongest month since October 2024, according to AFI platform numbers from classification society DNV.

The figure took Q3 alternative-capable vessel orders to 168, the highest quarterly total since Q3 2024, Kristian Hammer, product manager for AFI and senior consultant at DNV, said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday.

LNG accounted for 48 orders in September, with container ships making up 26 and car carriers 18.

LNG vessel orders have reached 200 so far in 2026, up 52% from the same period last year.

“Taken together, the numbers point to a market that is continuing to move forward, with shipowners placing substantial orders across multiple fuel pathways and vessel segments,” Hammer said.

There were also 12 ethanol/methanol-fuelled vessel orders in September, all for bulk carriers.

Nine LPG-fuelled vessel orders were also recorded in September.
