Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) Thursday said that it will now supply HFO bunkers to ISO 8217:2010 specification in the majority of its supply ports.

Paranagua, Rio de Janeiro, and Fortaleza are the exceptions, where ISO 8217:2005 will be used for 3.5 percent max sulfur products.

Bodies such as the International Bunkering Industry Association (IBIA) have generally encouraged use of the more recent ISO standards, arguing that it equates to better bunker quality.

However the next revision for the fuel specification, which is expected this year, has been criticized by organisations including Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) and INTERTANKO who say proposed changes to ISO 8217 may actually undermine efforts of the shipping industry toward fuel quality improvements
