Buyers Alliance ZEMBA Completes First Inaugural Tender for Low-Carbon Shipping
The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) has completed its first tender for lower-emission shipping, with final deliveries of environmental attribute certificates (EACs) to participating members now complete.
The tender delivered around 82,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in emissions reductions during 2025 and 2026 through the use of biomethane, ZEMBA said in a LinkedIn post yesterday.
The fuel replaced around 20,000 mt of fossil-based marine fuel across eight international shipping voyages, according to ZEMBA.
The initiative involved 17 contracts between Hapag-Lloyd and ZEMBA members, allowing cargo owners to support lower-emission shipping by paying a premium.
ZEMBA said it would build on the first tender with a second round covering e-methanol and e-ammonia.
ZEMBA brings together cargo owners and other maritime buyers seeking to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission shipping.
Online retail giant Amazon is among the early backers of the initiative.
In December 2025, the initiative selected shipping firms Hapag-Lloyd and North Sea Container Line as winners of its second e-fuel freight tender.
