Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) today announced that it has issued its Exhaust Gas Cleaning System Ready Full (EGCSR-F) notation to nine Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) ships, certifying that the ships fulfil ClassNK's requirement for SOx scrubber retrofits.

As Ship & Bunker reported in July, MOL said it was entering into a joint study to equip in-service vessels with scrubber systems in preparation for the 0.50 percent global sulfur cap set to be implemented in 2020.

ClassNK was joined by MOL, Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Minaminippon), Sanwa Dock Co., Ltd. (Sanwa Dock), and Wartsila Japan Ltd. (Wartsila Japan) in the SOx scrubber retrofit project.

"The aim of the project is to examine the engineering of SOx scrubber retrofits applied to a Pure Car Carrier (PCC) that is already in-service," explained ClassNK.

"The PCC was chosen due to the technical challenges caused by the limited space in the engine room compared to different ship types. ClassNK used the results obtained during the project and compiled them into safety requirements for retrofitting."

ClassNK says the retrofit plan developed during the project met project requirements, as well as related class and statutory requirements, resulting in the issued EGCS-F notation.

"ClassNK is now preparing to include the requirement for the issuance of EGCSR-F to its Guideline for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems scheduled to be released in July this year," notes the company.
