Marine battery manufacturer AYK Energy is set to unveil its first swappable containerised marine battery system, designed to simplify battery installation and reduce engineering costs for vessels.

It will be unveiled at the SMM 2026 event in Hamburg next month, the company said in an announcement on Friday.

The company is already receiving orders while the system moves through the class approval process, having completed its new technology qualification stage.

“The AYK Cosmos Marine Battery Container will simplify installation, reduce engineering complexity, lower project costs and speed up implementation,” Chris Kruger, founder of AYK Energy, said.

“The system also removes the need for a dedicated battery room which can be a highly complex engineering job and significant cost.”

Multiple containers can be used for voyages requiring higher energy capacity, while the system can also provide temporary hotel-load power in port or support hybrid and fully electric vessels.

AYK said the system has eight independent safety levels, IP67 protection and an A60 fire rating.

The company is initially targeting ferries, RoPax and passenger vessels, as well as tugboats, feeder vessels and other commercial craft.

“We firmly believe our technology will remove the barriers to electrification, make battery technology easier to adopt, and as a result accelerate maritime decarbonisation,” Kruger said.
