Corvus Energy today announced that it has been selected as the supplier of a lithium ion based energy storage system (ESS) to the Farstad Shipping ASA (Farstad) diesel electric Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) Far Sun.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the vessel is on long-term charter with Statoil ASA (Statoil) and is expected to see reductions in fuel consumption and emissions once the Orca Energy ESS is integrated by Vard Electro in the second half of 2017.

"As we have experienced with many vessel types, the Orca ESS is ideally suited for the hybridization of the Far Sun PSV," said Ronald Hansen, Global Service Manager of Corvus Energy.

"Through close collaboration with Vard, our teams have developed a lean solution which meets the aggressive environmental, safety, performance and operating cost objectives of Farstad and Statoil."

Corvus Energy notes the ESS will be used in all aspects of the PSV's operation, particularly during dynamic positioning and harbour operations to "significantly" reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Last year, Ship & Bunker reported that a joint development project (JDP), run by DNV GL, Farstad, and Statoil, demonstrated a potential annual €21,000 ($23,548) energy savings from the DNV GL's trim optimisation tool, ECO Assistant on two PSVs, including the Far Sun.
