Oil and gas carrier owner BW Group (BW) says it will buy 10 chemical tankers, including eight fuel-efficient newbuildings and two secondhand vessels from Stream Tankers AS (Stream Tankers).

"Stream Tankers has a fleet of quality vessels and newbuildings and BW is pleased to be acquiring this fleet," said CEO Andreas Sohmen-Pao.

"With this purchase, we will be able to strengthen our service offering in the chemical tanker segment."

The new ships, to be equipped with eco-design hulls and fuel-saving engines, will be built by Japanese shipyard Fukuoka Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. and Shitanoe Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., which also built the two secondhand vessels in 2008 and 2010.

The new vessels will be delivered between 2015 and 2018.

Norway-based Stream Tankers is majority owned by Utkilen AS, with EGD Shipholding AS holding 35 percent of the company and BSCO AS owning 5 percent, according to its website.

It owns and operates 22 chemical tankers.
