The Port of Santos in Brazil has announced that ethanol will be regularly supplied as marine fuel in the port, following an initial operation involving container line CMA CGM, Copersucar and Bunker One.

The first operation under the new phase took place earlier this year, when the 13,000 TEU CMA CGM Iron was bunkered with ethanol, the port said in an announcement last week.

The vessel was supplied with 500,000 litres of anhydrous bioethanol at that time, marking the first bioethanol bunker supply in Latin America.

It is fitted with Everllence engine certified to run on ethanol, methanol and conventional marine fuels.

Brazilian sugar and bioethanol producer Copersucar will supply the ethanol, which is transported to the port by Evolua Etanol and stored at AGEO Terminais.

Bunker One will handles the bunkering, using a protocol developed for ethanol, which has a low flash point.

Further ethanol bunkering operations involving CMA CGM vessels are planned before the end of 2026.

The partners said the move could help establish ethanol as an alternative marine fuel and create a new market for Brazil’s biofuel producers.

During the SIBCON week, Golden Island carried out Singapore's first ethanol bunkering operation, with Maersk dual-fuel vessel taking on the fuel.
