Hapag-Lloyd Seeks Green Methanol Offtake From US Project
German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has signed a letter of intent with US-based Southern Energy Renewables covering future green methanol supply from a proposed production facility in Louisiana.
Southern Energy’s planned $1.4 billion project in St. Charles Parish is expected to initially produce about 220,000 mt/year of green methanol, as per a press release issued on Thursday.
A final investment decision on the project is expected in Q3 2027, with commercial operations targeted for late 2029.
The agreement establishes a framework for project development and long-term green methanol offtake, subject to development milestones being achieved.
The companies may also explore co-investment in future production facilities.
Green methanol is a potential alternative marine fuel to decarbonise shipping and can be used in dual-fuel methanol ships.
Hapag-Lloyd has ordered several dual-fuel methanol container ships, with the latest eight ship order placed in December 2025.
The company said the project supports its multi-fuel strategy and target of achieving net-zero fleet operations by 2045.
