Engineering firm ABB will supply the power and propulsion systems for a third hybrid-electric ferry being built for the US' largest ferry operator, Washington State Ferries (WSF).
The Notice to Proceed covers an integrated system featuring ABB's onboard DC Grid and PEMS power and energy management system, alongside a 13.2-megawatt-hour battery system, ABB said in an emailed update on Thursday.
The vessel is designed to operate on battery power on shorter routes and while in port, reducing diesel consumption and emissions.
ABB's supply also includes propulsion drives and motors, marine automation, transformers, propellers and steering equipment.
WSF plans to introduce up to 16 new hybrid-electric ferries by 2040.
The operator aims to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 76% and ultimately achieve an emission-free fleet by 2050.
