August bunker sales in Panama rose 11.2 percent year-on-year, and in the process pushed year-to-date sales past the 3 million metric tonne (mt) mark, according to the latest data from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).

Sales for all products totalled 355,951 mt, comprised of 331,873 mt in fuel oil sales and 24,078 mt of distillate sales, compared to a total of 320,162 mt (298,206 mt fuel oil and 21,956 mt distillate) for the month in 2016.

277,174 mt of the total was sold in Balboa on the country's Pacific coast, with the balance of 78,778 mt sold on the Atlantic coast with the port of Cristobal.

With 447 bunkering operations in August, the average stem size was 796 mt, dropping below 800 mt for the first time since March.

Year-to-date sales now stand at 3,101,690 mt, 19.7 percent higher than the 2,591,093 mt sold in the eight month period last year.

AMP data shows Panama broke the 3 million mt mark in October last year, and sold just over 4 million mt in 2016 as a whole.
