The Green Award Foundation has announced that Buenos Aires has become the first port in South America to join the network of Green Award ports.

Effective May 22, 2017, Buenos Aires Port now provides a 10 percent discount on vessel dues for Green Award ships.

"Since the port is in a strategic location, the metropolitan area of the beautiful city of Buenos Aires, the Port Administration is primarily concerned with issues in port that can affect the local community." said the foundation.

The Port of Buenos Aires, after having evaluated advantages of various initiatives, is said to have selected Green Award as a way to improve air and water quality and to reduce environmental impacts.

"This step taken by the port is an expression of its social accountability and environmental awareness," said the foundation.

"Participation in the Green Award scheme will help to attract safe and clean ships, encourage quality shipping and contribute to overall improvement of shipping in South America."
