Malaysian agency has detained a tanker and a tugboat suspected of conducting an unauthorised ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of oil off Selangor.

The vessels were spotted at around 2 AM on Thursday, about one nautical mile south of Tanjung Rhu, Kuala Langat, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said in a social media post yesterday.

The tanker was suspected of transferring diesel to the tugboat.

Neither vessel could produce the required authorisation documents. Officers also found RM65,000 in cash aboard the tugboat.

The vessels were detained under Malaysia’s Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.

The tanker’s captain, the tugboat’s master and a second engineer were taken in for questioning.

Those found guilty could face a fine of up to RM100,000 ($24,467), up to two years in prison, or both, the agency said.
