Guangzhou Port in China has completed its first methanol bunkering operation for a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel.

The operation took place on Friday at Nansha Automobile Port, where the bunker vessel Daqing 268 supplied 2,300 mt of methanol to the RoRo vessel Guangrong, including 1,400 mt of bonded green methanol, the Guangzhou Port Authority said today.

The methanol dual-fuel car carrier then departed for Europe carrying more than 4,300 vehicles.

Guangzhou Port said it is the first port in the world to offer green methanol bunkering for container ships, bulk carriers and car carriers.

Earlier this month, the port conducted its first green methanol bunkering for an international container ship at Nansha Terminal.

Methanol is seen as one of the more practical alternative fuels because it can be handled using relatively familiar infrastructure compared with some other emerging marine fuels.
