South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and BAR Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the deployment of WindWings wind propulsion systems.

The agreement establishes a joint engineering approach to integrate WindWings rigid wing sails into vessel designs at the newbuild stage, BAR said in an email statement on Tuesday.

The companies will work on linking the WindWings control system with HHI's integrated vessel control systems and developing performance verification methods.

The partnership is expected to support the expansion of wind-assisted propulsion into a wider range of vessel types, including gas carriers, as shipowners look to cut fuel consumption and emissions.

Wind propulsion systems, such as rigid sails, harness wind energy for propulsion, helping reduce bunker fuel consumption and emissions.

The three-year MOU builds on existing WindWings installations on both retrofit and newbuild vessels and aims to create a more standardised pathway for adoption as regulatory pressure on shipping continues to increase.
