Shipping company A.P Moller Maersk has taken delivery of a methanol dual-fuel container ship.

The mid-sized container ship, Tema Maersk, was named in a ceremony at Yangzijiang Shipyard in China, the firm said in a LinkedIn post on Friday.

Methanol is seen as one of the more practical alternative fuels because it can be handled using relatively familiar infrastructure compared with some other emerging marine fuels.

Maersk has been one of the early adopters of methanol. The company has been operating a fleet of more than 20 methanol-fuelled ships.

The company has also been exploring ethanol as a marine fuel alongside methanol.

Earlier this year, it successfully tested 100% ethanol in a methanol-fuelled container ship, demonstrating the potential for the fuel to be used as an alternative or blended with methanol.
