Energy firm Repsol has launched the commercial supply of co-processed marine fuels containing renewable content at the Port of Algeciras.

The launch coincides with the first commercial voyage of Repsol's new bunkering vessel, Bahia Candela, the firm said in an email update on Thursday.

Repsol has chartered the 7,500 m3 bunkering vessel from shipowner Mureloil. The vessel entered service on June 4.

During the voyage, the vessel loaded co-processed fuel at the company's Petronor refinery in Bilbao before delivering it to customers. The vessel is equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system and can handle multiple bunker grades.

Co-processed fuels differ from conventional biofuels in the way they are made.

Co-processing integrates renewable feedstocks such as used cooking oil or HVO with fossil fuels in existing refinery processes, producing fully compatible low-emission fuels. By contrast, biofuels are derived from organic matter and are often produced in dedicated biorefineries.

These fuels can be used as a drop-in fuel in existing ships without needing any modifications.

“This milestone marks Repsol’s entry into the supply of low-carbon marine fuels in Algeciras,” Repsol said.
