Cargo Ship on Fire After Being Hit in Strait of Hormuz
A cargo vessel was hit by an unknown projectile and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz today, with two casualties reported, according to a British government agency monitoring maritime security in the region.
The incident was reported at 06:30 UTC today, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in a social media update today.
“The Company Security Officer of a cargo vessel reports being struck by an unknown projectile,” UKMTO said.
“The vessel is on fire and adrift.”
“All crew have been evacuated, with 2 casualties reported.”
UKMTO advised vessels operating in the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.
Commenting on the incident, Martin Kelly, head of advisory at EOS Risk Group, said in a social media post that an “Antigua & Barbuda Bulk Carrier [was] abandoned following Iranian attack in Strait of Hormuz.”
Several ships have come under attack in the Strait of Hormuz since the Iran war began in late February.
