A tanker was hijacked by six armed men in the Gulf of Aden today and is being taken towards Somalia, according to a British government agency monitoring maritime security in the region.

The incident was reported 136 nautical miles east of Al Mukalla, Yemen, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in a social media update today.

The tanker was sailing west when it was approached by an unauthorised vessel.

“UKMTO has received confirmation that the tanker has been boarded by six armed persons who are now in control of the vessel and redirecting it to Somalia,” it said in the update.

“Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.”
