A project to build a hydrogen-powered cruise liner could include several bunker ships to provide the vessel with fuel, according to maritime news provider Tradewinds.

Viking Cruises project director Serge Fossati told Tradewinds that bunker tankers were part of the project and that the company is talking to Norwegian energy giant Statoil about large-scale hydrogen production.

Such a ship would take around seven years to construct, ship broking sources were cited as saying.

As emissions from shipping come under increasing regulatory scrutiny, a number of bunker alternatives to crude oil-derived heavy fuel oil are emerging.

Liquid hydrogen as fuel is established in rocket technology and used in space exploration and satellites.
